Houston Methodist Cancer Research Update – March 2024
Advancing Cancer Research with Houston Methodist & Golfers Against Cancer
At Golfers Against Cancer, we are committed to supporting groundbreaking research that aims to find cures and improve treatments for cancer patients. We are excited to share the latest updates from the research projects at Houston Methodist Hospital, which have greatly benefited from our funding and support.
1. Enhancing T Cell Immunotherapy Dr. Elvin Blanco’s project focuses on boosting the metabolic health of T cells to improve their effectiveness in cancer immunotherapy. By increasing the mitochondrial mass of these cells, Dr. Blanco’s team has demonstrated that T cells can better sustain their energy levels and enhance their cancer-killing abilities. This innovative approach has garnered additional funding from METAvivor, propelling the research into new territories, including potential applications beyond cancer.
2. DYRK1A Inhibitors for Glioblastoma Drs. Andrei Mikheev and Robert Rostomily are pioneering new strategies to treat glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive brain cancer. Their work with DYRK1A inhibitors has shown that these drugs can significantly reduce tumor growth and improve the efficacy of current treatments like temozolomide. This promising research is laying the foundation for new therapeutic approaches and has led to further grant applications to continue this vital work.
3. CAR-Modified T Cell Therapy for Solid Tumors Drs. Qing Yi, Jenny Chang, and Nestor Esnaola are developing advanced CAR T cell therapies specifically designed to target solid tumors. By engineering T cells to recognize and attack tumor cells more effectively, and by incorporating IL9 to enhance their anti-tumor activity, their research shows great promise. The success of these preliminary studies has attracted funding from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, pushing this innovative therapy closer to clinical application.
